Making a good resin sculpture is not easy. Some regrettable works have also affected the reputation of resin sculpture to some extent.

High-quality resin sculptures must be skillfully combined with all aspects of production.

1.Design and shape models

The design of resin sculpture should consider the characteristics of material technology. Glass fiber reinforced plastic is easy to form beautiful streamlined products, highlighting the sense of the times of works, and can be designed with circular arcs. Due to the lightweight and high strength of the resin, it can produce works with strong dynamic support and small support area.

Sometimes it is necessary to post-coat the surface layer. The gel coat has to level property. It has a certain leveling effect under the action of tension during curing, which is not suitable for a fine texture. These should be carefully considered during design. The original mold can be made of clay. After the sculpture model is completed, it is allowed to dry naturally and the resin mold can be made.

2.Production of resin

Production using hand mash method. According to the shape and characteristics of the sculpture, from the perspective of facilitating molding and demolding, the mold is decomposed into several units for overturning. Shape it and combine them into a whole. Finally, the whole was treated and painted, and a resin sculpture was completed.

3.Mold making

Mold making is the key to molding. Gypsum is often used for mold making, but gypsum has low strength and is easy to deform for a long time. Silicone rubber and resin materials can be used to make molds. Silicone rubber is in a fluid state before use, and has good flow and filling properties.

After the cross-linking reaction, an elastomer is formed, which has a large elastic deformation. The water of the original mold has no effect on the cross-linking reaction. After cross-linking, the silicone rubber has good sealing properties and does not adhere to the original glass fiber reinforced plastic. Used as a resin mold surface layer, it can reproduce the shape of the work with high quality, and it can be smoothly released. However, the crosslinked body is easily deformed and needs to support the carrier. The resin is easy to be molded and used as a carrier for molds.

4. Mold making method:

After the silicone rubber is prepared, the silicone rubber layer is coated on the original mold in 1 mm or more. After the silicone rubber is crosslinked, a glass fiber reinforced plastic layer of about 3 mm is formed on the silicone rubber. After curing, cut the mold along the divided unit blocks. Pay attention to cut the resin layer and silicone rubber layer at the same time.

The connecting ribs are made between the unit blocks to set position grooves at the connecting ribs to ensure that the connecting ribs make the unit block molds into a whole. After the work is completed, the resin unit block is demolded, and then the silicone rubber layer is removed, and the removed silicone rubber is immediately returned to the resin unit mold.

5, forming method

Adopt the hand lay-up method, design ideas before making. Start with one part of the pasted product. After a part is cured, the combined mold is continued to paste. Combine as many unit blocks as possible at one time. Finally, a unit block is left. The unit block is pre-formed and glued to the overall sculpture.

The difficult-to-manufacture parts of the sculpture, such as the animal’s corner legs and tails, can be roughly shaped with corresponding metal materials, and then glass fiber reinforced plastic is formed on the materials, which are polished and trimmed. The shape of the sculpture is relatively complicated and should be treated specially. The place where glass is difficult to lay should be filled with resin first, and then glass fiber and gingham cloth should be laid. The length of the resin putty for the surface layer is preferably 10 millimeters. When molding, the metal skeleton is buried in the sculpture. Increase the stiffness and strength of the sculpture, increase its service life, and finally install it with a metal skeleton.

6. Post-processing methods

Post-processing, on the one hand, is to repair local defects of the product, and it is important to produce surface effects. Common surfaces are imitation copper and imitation bronze. The sculpture made of FRP is bright in color, lines and beautiful in shape. It can be made into a variety of effects imitating gold, copper, stone, showing a clear sense of the times. Good resin sculptures must be designed, modeled, shaped, and treated to ensure the quality of each link.
